Every lodge begins as an idea: a ridge with a view, a riverbank shaded by ancient trees, a stretch of desert silence that guests will cross the world to experience. What happens between that idea and the first guest's arrival shapes everything that follows. It decides how much the property will spend on energy for the next thirty years, how far its water will stretch through a dry season, and whether the community next door sees the lodge as a neighbour

or an intruder.

We started Sustainate Consult because too many of those decisions are still made without sustainability in the room.

Why a tourism-focused practice

Tourism in sub-Saharan Africa sells something unusual. Guests are not buying a bed; they are buying access to wildlife, landscapes and cultures that exist only because they have been protected. When those assets degrade, the product degrades with them. Few industries depend so directly on the health of the places in which they operate. That dependence cuts both ways.

Tourism can fund conservation, create rural employment where few alternatives exist, and give communities a direct financial stake in protecting wildlife. Done carelessly, it can also strain scarce water, displace local livelihoods, and leave a footprint that outlasts the business itself. Our role is to help operators land firmly on the right side of that line, and to prove it.

What we do

Our work follows the life of a tourism business. For new developments, we integrate sustainability at the planning and design stage, when choices about orientation, materials, energy systems and community partnerships cost the least to get right. For established lodges, hotels and tour operators, we provide strategy, certification readiness, and the measurement and reporting that investors and trade partners increasingly require.

We are members of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which means our advice is anchored in the criteria that underpin credible certification worldwide. We also support the African partner agencies of Evaneos, the European online travel platform, as they strengthen their own sustainability practices.

What you will find here

This journal is where we will think out loud. Expect practical articles on certification pathways, water and energy efficiency in remote properties, community benefit models, and the regulations reshaping the industry. We will also share perspectives on wider questions: how climate change is altering the economics of safari tourism, what discerning travellers are actually asking for, and where the sector is getting things right.

Our aim is simple. We want every article to leave you with at least one idea you can act on.

Let us talk

If you are planning a new property, preparing for certification, or simply questioning whether your operation is as responsible as it could be, we would welcome the conversation. The places that make tourism in this region extraordinary deserve businesses designed to protect them.

Welcome to the journal.
